Sheffield Archives

The historical evidence available for the study of the Luddites is mainly official material including the correspondence of Earl Fitzwilliam who was the Lord Lieutenant of the West Riding during the Luddite troubles of 1812.

The Earl Fitzwilliam’s papers are held at Sheffield Archives as part of the Wentworth Woodhouse Muniments and include various papers on Luddism including: letters, reports on the activities of Luddites, information on military dispositions in Yorkshire, the Luddite Oath and examinations of Joseph Woodhead of Elland, Thomas Broughton of Barnsley and Benjamin N. R. Batty of Huddersfield.

Sheffield Archives also holds correspondence from John Howson, steward at Cannon Hall to Walter Spencer Stanhope in London discussing Luddism in 1812.
